NVIDIA has answered the most frequently asked questions regarding powering the new GeForce RTX 40-series graphics gas pedals.
In particular, the company revealed more details about the complete adapters that are needed to connect the new graphics cards to older power supplies.Image source: NVIDIAThe GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards do not require new ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0-compliant power supplies.
The most important requirement for the power supply unit is its power.
So, for the flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, NVIDIA recommends using a PSU with 850W of power.
At that, the declared power consumption of the gas pedal itself can be up to 450W.
For GeForce RTX 4080 16GB (320W) and RTX 4080 12GB (285W) models, the company recommends a 750W and 700W PSU, respectively.GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards feature new 12+4-pin PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR power connector.
To be compatible with old power supplies that do not have power cables with the new connector, NVIDIA included a video card special adapter from the four standard 8-pin connectors to the new 12VHPWR.Company calls the adapter itself \"smart\".
It is compatible with the ATX 2.0 standard and has an active converter which converts the signals from the old power supply to the corresponding signals for the new PCIe 5.0 (ATX 3.0) socket.
This provides a quality power supply, and should not have any problems with power cards from old PSUs.The manufacturer adds that the GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 16GB graphics cards requires a minimum of three standard 8-pin connectors through the adapter to transmit 450 W of power, but it is better if you connect all four cables to the adapter - especially if you plan to overclock the GPU.NVIDIA indicates that the adapter has a declared life of 30 connections / disconnections, which is standard for PCIe connectors The company recommends leaving 36mm of free space above the graphics card where the adapter is located for easy installation and allowable bending.
