IBM and AMD will work together to develop confidential computing technologies for the cloud and AI.

IBM and AMD have announced a multi-year joint development agreement to improve and expand security and artificial intelligence (AI) offerings from both companies. The agreement will extend this vision by leveraging open source software, open standards and system architectures to manage sensitive computing in hybrid cloud environments and support a wide range of gas pedals in high performance computing (HPC) and mission-critical capabilities such as virtualization and encryption.

Security for mission-critical data remains a challenge for many companies: According to the IBM Institute for Business Value, cybersecurity is now a major barrier to adoption, as well as a key criterion for selecting cloud service providers. According to Gartner, sensitive computing potentially removes an ongoing barrier to the adoption of a hybrid cloud for highly regulated businesses or any organization that raises concerns about possible unauthorized third party access to data used in a public cloud. Confidential computing & ; a hardware-based technology that encrypts data associated with a running virtual machine (VM), including during workloads, by isolating computing in a robust runtime environment (TEE). Using this technology helps prevent potential attackers from accessing confidential information from outside, even in the event of a hack. Confidential Hybrid Cloud Computing is opening up new opportunities for enterprise hybrid cloud computing, especially in regulated industries such as finance, healthcare and insurance.
