Intel remains the biggest player in the graphics gas pedal market, although formally it still supplies mostly CPUs with integrated graphics. NVIDIA is in second place, and AMD is in the bottom three. The latest statistics on the PC graphics market were published by Jon Peddie Research.
Data available in the free version of the report shows that 101 million graphics processors, including those integrated into the CPU, were shipped in the third quarter. This represents a 12 % increase in shipments over the same period last year, but a 18.2 % decrease over the prior year quarter. CPU shipments alone were up 9.2 % year over year, but down 23.1 % sequentially. Intel and AMD executives at recent quarterly events have noted that customers simply can't make computers in the quantities they want because of a lack of related components, so they aren't buying CPUs in excess of the numbers they need. If we look at the market balance in graphics solutions for PCs as a whole, the share of Intel has decreased from 68 to 62 %, AMD share increased by almost 2 percentage points to 18 %, and NVIDIA has strengthened its position by almost 5 percentage points to 20 %. In terms of GPU shipments, Intel's was down 25.6 % sequentially, AMD's was down 11.4 %, and NVIDIA increased its GPU shipments by 8 % over the second quarter.
In the discrete graphics segment the market has not changed, NVIDIA products are still 83 % of the market, while AMD is satisfied with 17 %. At the same time the number of video cards shipped in the third quarter increased by 10.9 % sequentially. In fact, NVIDIA in this sense was helped by a higher reliance on discrete graphics, which in today's environment is used to accelerate computing and mining, not just in games. Intel and AMD, which are more dependent on the laptop market, had to reduce the supply of graphics processors in a shortage of related components. In general, Jon Peddie Research experts expect the volume of GPU supply will decrease by an average of 1.1 % annually in the interval to 2025, and by the end of the forecast period the world will use more than 3.2 billion graphics processors. By that point, 31 percent of all PCs will have discrete graphics. The authors of the forecast believe that the situation in the supply of components in the PC market will not normalize until the end of 2022.
