Acer unveils Chromebook Spin 514 laptop with AMD Ryzen Mobile processor

Acer has timed the announcement of the Chromebook Spin 514 portable computer running Chrome OS to coincide with the CES 2021 consumer electronics show, which is going digital this year.

The laptop is built on the AMD Ryzen Mobile platform: it will be offered in modifications with the Ryzen 7 3700C and Ryzen 5 3500C processor. These chips contain an integrated Radeon Vega Mobile graphics accelerator. The DDR4 DRAM memory capacity is up to 16GB depending on the configuration, the capacity of the SSD & ; 256GB.

The Chromebook has a reinforced design (MIL-STD 810H). The anodised aluminium base and durable Corning Gorilla Glass protect the display from damage. Drop heights of up to 122 cm will not affect it. The IPS display is touch-optimized, and it's touch sensitive. The panel size is 14 inches diagonally, the resolution & ; 1920  × 1080 pixels (Full HD format).

The cover with the display can be rotated 360 degrees, realising different operating modes, including tablet mode. An optional backlit keyboard is also available.

Two USB Type-C and USB 3.2 Gen1 ports each, along with HDMI and a microSD card slot, provide a choice of connectors. There are Wi-Fi 5 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) 2x2 MU-MIMO and Bluetooth 5.0 wireless adapters. Battery life is claimed to be up to 10 hours on a single charge. The Chromebook Spin 514 will go on sale in February with a guide price starting at $480;
