MSI adds Kombo Strike feature to its B550 and X570 BIOS to boost Ryzen 7 5800X3D performance

MSI has released new BIOS versions for its AMD X570 and B550 chipset-based motherboards.
The fresh firmware adds more customization options for Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors.
These chips officially do not support manual overclocking, however, some motherboard manufacturers go for various tricks, allowing to raise CPU frequency.Image source: MSIMSI has released beta BIOS for its AMD X570 and B550 chipsets with Kombo Strike feature.
At the moment, it is hard to say what exactly the benefit of this feature is - the company itself does not talk about it in detail.
The description to the new BIOS version only mentions \"improved Ryzen 7 5800X3D performance\".
At the moment we know that Kombo Strike has three operating modes and an option to turn it off.
Probably the third mode provides the biggest performance boost for the processor.
It is quite possible that MSI has found a way to change the CPU power consumption level.
Officially this setting is locked out for the CPU as well as the others which aim to overclock.
Corresponding beta BIOS versions with Kombo Strike have been released for X570S Unify, Ace, X570 Godlike, B550 Unify X, B550 Unify, B550 Gaming Edge WiFi, B550I Gaming Edge MAX WiFi and B550M Mortar mainboards.
After installing the new BIOS version, the Kombo Strike feature can be found under Overclocking/Advanced CPU Configuration.
Keep in mind that this is a beta firmware version and therefore errors and general system instability are possible during its operation.Note that MSI is releasing the second BIOS version with additional settings for Ryzen 7 5800X3D within a week.
The previous version adds CPU offset, Precision Boost Overdrive and Curve Optimizer.
The new beta BIOS also adds CPU Offset Voltage setup.
It is intended for enthusiasts who want to experiment with the settings of the operating voltage indicator of the chipRyzen 7 5800X3D.
But it is recommended to be used only by experienced users who know what they are doing.MSI is not the only motherboard manufacturer who tries to expand the possibilities of changing Ryzen 7 5800X3D settings.
For example, ASUS has also included new features in their latest firmware versions that work on all Ryzen 5000 series processors, including the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
Because of this, some owners of these chips were able to overclock them to a frequency above 5 GHz at the official maximum of 4.5 GHz.

MSI showed the AMD X670 dual chip chipset live for the first time

MSI showed the AMD X670 dual chip chipset live for the first time

MSI showed the AMD X670 dual chip chipset live for the first time

MSI in its online broadcast MSI Insider showed the AMD X670 chipset live on one of its motherboards without a cooler installed for the first time.
It really consists of two chipsets.
Earlier on AMD itself confirmed that its high-end chipset is a bundle of two AMD B650 chips, but the company did not show them live.Image source: MSII earlier confirmed that Ryzen 7000 systems will receive AMD EXPO technology to overclock DDR5 RAM, and also published a video instruction to install Ryzen 7000 in the new socket AM5.
AMD itself doesn't seem to like that its partner is so straightforward in disclosing this information.
Apparently, at Computex 2022 AMD only wanted to share some fresh details about its next-generation desktop processors, as well as the platform in which they will be used.
No full-fledged announcement, at least now, was out of the question.
It is expected this fall.
After all, under AMD pressure MSI had to remove some previously published information.
However, the manufacturer did not give up any fresh leaks, and the last one was live, where MSI was showing different products which are about to be released.
The new AMD platform uses Socket AM5 (LGA 1718) processor socket and will support chips with a peak power consumption of 170W.
First generation of Socket AM5 processors will be based on Zen 4 architecture, and will have support for DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interface.
Motherboards for new processors will be equipped with AMD X670E, X670 and B650 chipsets.
The first and second are logical sets, consisting of two B650 chipsets.
They will support up to 24 lanes of PCIe 5.0 for graphics and memory subsystems.
X670E and X670 chipsets have 7 W heat pack per chip, and X670 boards with two chips moved away from each other are quite able to get by with passive cooling, which would be hard to achieve if all these chipsets possibilities were realized in one chip.

MSI has taken a cue from Gigabyte and makes its motherboard with connectors on the inside out

It looks like Gigabyte has set a new trend with its Project Stealth components with ports \"inside out\".
MSI is developing a Project Zero motherboard for Alder Lake processors with all connectors for cables moved to the back side.Image source: VideoCardzThe motherboard for Project Zero is the MSI MEG Unify, most likely based on the Intel Z690 chipset.
The company decided to move the board's connectors for SATA drives, 24-pin power cable, EPS connectors for CPU power and at least one of the USB connectors.
The regular MSI MEG Unify Z690.
Image source: Twitter / @g01d3nm4ng0It's very likely that the bottom USB connectors and other ports for the front of the case have also been moved to the back of the motherboard.
The angle of the published photos of Project Zero doesn't allow us to establish exactly, but now the places where the USB and front panel connectors are usually placed are covered by the casing.
MSI Project Zero Whether MSI plans to put a similar motherboard on the market, as Gigabyte has decided to do, is still unknown.
Note that use of back-to-back connector cards also requires rethinking computer chassis design.
Gigabyte has solved this issue by upgrading its Aorus C300G case.
At the same time, the company believes that placing power wires on the inside of the motherboard not only improves the aesthetics of the final assembly, but also improves air circulation within the system.
MSI Project Zero.
Image source: Twitter / @g01d3nm4ng0 Whether MSI also plans to experiment with graphics gas pedals and its computer cases, as Gigabyte did, is not yet known.

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 review: we wish we had such a board

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 review: we wish we had such a board

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 review: we wish we had such a board

If we consider LGA1700 platform, boards based on B660 chipset look like the most balanced devices in their class.
We talked about this in detail in our article \"The best mass gaming platform - 2022: Core i5-12400F + DDR4 + B660\".
Yes, the junior chipset in comparison with the same Z690 has a number of limitations, such as the inability to overclock the CPU.
But they do not prevent the user to build a gaming PC or workstation of almost any level.
Performance from this almost does not suffer, and functionality - a parameter that must be considered individually.
So we are not surprised that there are so many B660 chipset based motherboards already released, and over time there will be more. The MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 is an example of a quality motherboard based on a junior Intel chipset.
It can do a lot - and in this review, we will tell you what is so good in it.
MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4⇡#Technical specifications and equipmentThen writing this article there are nine B660-boards on the MSI website, which the manufacturer considers a gaming board.
Interestingly, there are four versions of MAG B660M MORTAR: one supporting DDR5-memory, the second with DDR4, the third with DDR4 and DDR5, and a wireless module.
And finally, ours, with wireless module and DDR4.
At that, the models with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are in black and silver coloring, and the other \"Mortyrs\" are entirely black.
The table below shows the specifications of the tested MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4.

Among the interesting and rare things in the box were a couple of small screwdrivers.
The MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 motherboard has a mATX form factor.
Within the standard, we are dealing with a complete device in the sense that a 244mm PCB length is used here.Motherboards are the type of device that you can understand a lot from the photo.
On these pictures the MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 looks really impressive.
MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4If you want to use a big super cooler like Noctua NH-D15 in your build be prepared for it to overlap all DIMM slots as well as the M.2 slot closest to the CPU socket.Four DIMM slots is great.
To recap, the Alder Lake chips support up to 128GB of DDR4 RAM.
The maximum effective frequency of the modules is 4800 MHz - so stated in the characteristics of \"Mortira\".
True, the operation of RAM is accompanied by a number of nuances, which will be discussed later.
MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 has three expansion slots:PCI Express x16 works in PCIe 4.0 mode and is the main and only PEG-port connected directly to the CPU.
The slot is additionally reinforced with metal.PCI Express x4 works in PCIe 3.0 mode, but is made in PCI-E x16 case.PCI Express x1 works in PCIe 3.0 mode. So, if we talk about gaming builds, we can install one video card of any class here.
However, take into consideration that a powerful graphics gas pedal with three sectional cooler will overlap PCI Express x1 and M.2 slots.
There are two M.2 ports in the device, and the location of both of them suits me fine.
Especially nice is the fact that both SSD slots are equipped with aluminum heatsinks.
The MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 supports SSD form factors 2242, 2260 and 2280 - both of which are four PCI Express 4.0 lanes.
The second (lower) M.2 can work in SATA mode, but then the SATA8 port will be disabled. At that, the board has only six SATA 6Gbps connectors - just the numbering of the pads starts with the number 3.
The hero of the review has four connectors for connecting fans.
All of them are 4-pin, but motherboards have been able to regulate the speed of \"fans\" for a long time

MSI announces Resizable BAR support for a host of its AMD and Intel processor motherboards

Following the announcement of Resizable BAR support on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards, MSI has rushed to announce the support across a range of its AMD and Intel processor-based motherboards. Surely the same boards will also support AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards.

The technology is implemented on most MSI motherboards with Intel Z590, B560, H510, Z490, B460, H410, Z390, H370, B360 and H310 chipsets and also on AMD motherboards with TRX40, X570, B550, A520, X470, B450 chipset. The company warns that on AMD motherboards the technology does not work with all processors for AM4 pads (at least on all Ryzen 5000). Of course, it is recommended to upgrade your motherboard to the latest firmware version and activate the appropriate items in the BIOS settings: Re-Size BAR and Above 4G Memory/Crypto Currency mining. MSI says that according to its tests the technology works great on all compatible platforms.

Resizable BAR technology is a part of PCI Express interface specification since v2.0 but AMD drew public attention to it only last autumn by introducing it as Smart Access Memory in its Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. With Resizable BAR, the CPU accesses the entire video memory array, while Windows PCs without this feature can access a maximum of 256 MB at a time. This eliminates I/O channel bottlenecks and, according to AMD, delivers up to a 10–15% performance gain in some games.

MSI showed Ryzen 9 5900X overclocking via voltage reduction with AMD Curve Optimizer

MSI showed Ryzen 9 5900X overclocking via voltage reduction with AMD Curve Optimizer

AMD previously promised to release a new version of AGESA protocol with AMD Curve Optimizer tool in January 2021. Support will be introduced starting with AGESA version 1.1.0.0 Patch D in BIOS updates for 400 and 500 series motherboards. AMD Curve Optimizer is part of AMD Precision Boost Overdrive 2 technology which allows the CPU voltage to be adaptively adjusted.

The goal of the tool & ; is to reduce the voltage in minimum and maximum load scenarios whenever possible. However, instead of simply applying a fixed voltage offset across the entire range, the technology will use internal sensors (workload metrics, temperature, and so on) to adapt the voltage as needed. With AMD's tool, the processor can change the voltage up to 1000 times per second. In fact, we are talking about an official way to automatically overclock the chip by reducing its power consumption figure. Wccftech has obtained several MSI screenshots which show AMD Curve Optimizer tool running on B450 Tomahawk motherboard with Ryzen 9 5900X processor. As you can see in one of the images, the feature is activated through the BIOS and not through the AMD Ryzen Master application.

In the table below you can see the result of AMD Curve Optimizer. During the single-core Cinebench R20 test, it allowed you to increase the processor frequency by an additional 50 MHz over the stated official value. As a consequence, the chip's performance increased by an additional 1.6%. In multi-core tests, we managed to increase the performance by an additional 2%, and frequencies & ; by 100 MHz over the declared nominal value.

More importantly, AMD Curve Optimizer's performance allows you to keep the CPU's temperature level unchanged for the worse even at higher CPU speeds. MSI used a Curve Optimizer value of «-15» for the test. When using «-30» value, the system started working unstable. The manufacturer has confirmed that they will release a new version of BIOS with fresh AGESA firmware for MSI B450 MAX motherboard in the coming days. The rest of MSI's motherboards will receive the corresponding software updates next year.
